Network Administrator Job Analysis
Job Description:
The Network Administrator is responsible for maintaining and monitoring the organization’s computer networks, including configuring hardware, managing network security, and troubleshooting connectivity issues to ensure optimal network performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Monitor network performance to ensure availability and efficiency.
- Manage VPNs and access controls for remote and internal users.
- Perform network upgrades and patches.
- Maintain network diagrams and documentation.
Daily Tasks:
- Monitor network traffic and resolve connectivity issues.
- Apply firmware updates to networking devices.
- Perform regular network security checks.
- Document changes in configurations and troubleshoot logs.
- Collaborate with ISPs and vendors for issue resolution.
Skills:
1. Computer Skills:
- Networking Tools: Cisco IOS, SolarWinds, Wireshark.
- Protocols: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs.
- Security Tools: VPN configuration, firewalls (Cisco ASA, Palo Alto).
- Monitoring: SNMP, Nagios, and PRTG.
2. Language Skills:
- Proficient in English communication for technical documentation.
- Ability to convey network status and solutions clearly.
3. Job Technical (Functional) Skills:
- Network troubleshooting and issue resolution.
- Installation and maintenance of routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Network security implementation (IDS/IPS, access controls).
- Bandwidth optimization and monitoring.
4. Interpersonal Skills:
- Communication: Reporting network issues to management and IT staff.
- Problem-Solving: Quickly diagnosing network bottlenecks and failures.
- Time Management: Managing multiple tasks effectively.
- Collaboration: Working with teams to ensure secure and reliable networks.
Job Specifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Network Engineering, IT, or related field.
- Experience: 2–4 years of network administration experience.
- Certifications: Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+, Palo Alto Networks PCNSA.
Performance Metrics:
- Network uptime percentage.
- Mean time to resolve (MTTR) issues.
- Compliance with network security protocols.
